SEO Specialist Salary in 2026: Bands by Level, City and In-House vs Agency

You type an SEO specialist salary into Google and the first page hands you seven figures from seven publishers, none of them labelled with the level, the city or the employment type they actually measured. Built In's national average base is $55,503, taken from anonymous community submissions. Glassdoor's is $85,999, self-reported and quoted second-hand, and both are real while neither one is yours. You do not have a salary problem yet, you have a labelling problem, and it costs you money every time you walk into a review without knowing which number describes your job. Which of those figures was measured on work like yours? The answer gets more uncomfortable when a single publisher prices its own Director of SEO below its own SEO Specialist on the same page. Nobody is lying to you, the data is just louder than it is precise, and once you can read the labels the argument about your pay changes shape.
The offer in front of you was priced before anybody checked what the work was worth in your market, and the pages that could have told you why are the reason you cannot prove it. Robert Half's 2027 US Salary Guide puts an SEO Specialist in Washington DC at $121,030 at the top of its band. The same guide, same title, same methodology, prices Greenville, South Carolina at $87,360. Nothing about the work changes between those two postcodes. Somewhere in the last hiring round somebody ran the same search you did and landed more than thirty thousand dollars higher for the same title and the same responsibilities.
Every figure below carries its publisher, the level, the geography, the type of measurement behind it and the date. Data as of October 2026.
SEO Specialist Salary Numbers, Labelled by Who Measured Them

No two rows describe the same population. Read the "what it measures" column before the number itself, because that is where the disagreement lives.
Source | Figure | What it actually measures | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
Robert Half, US Salary Guide | $67,750 low / $78,500 mid / $91,000 high | Projected starting salaries from a staffing firm's own placements, national, SEO Specialist title | 2027 guide |
Robert Half, same site, older guide | $66,000 low / $75,000 mid / $89,750 high | Same methodology, previous guide year, still live on the same domain | 2026 guide |
Glassdoor | $85,999 average base ($41/hr), 25th to 75th $65,263 to $114,128, 90th $146,484 | Self-reported by employees, national, all levels mixed, page not reachable and quoted second-hand | 2026 |
Indeed | $82,212 average, $42,838 to $157,773 | Job postings, national, all levels, 895 postings, updated Sep 28 2026 | Sep 2026 |
SalaryExpert (ERI) | $74,248 average gross, $76,495 total compensation | Salary survey data collected from employers, national | Oct 2 2026 |
ZipRecruiter | $67,388 average, $32.40 an hour | Job postings, national, all levels | Sep 2026 |
ColabContent | $64,000 median midpoint of listed ranges ($60,000 to $75,000) | Live postings sample, 45 of 215 postings listed a range, Sep 2 to Oct 6 2026 window | Oct 2026 |
Payscale | $59,179 average base, 444 profiles | Self-reported profiles, national, skewed toward job seekers | May 2026 |
Built In | $55,503 average base, $60,901 total compensation, median $50,000 | Anonymous self-reported community data, tech weighted | 2026 |
BLS OEWS, SOC 13-1161 | Median $78,760, mean $89,490, 10th percentile $43,390, 90th $155,480 | Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists class, national, all levels | May 2025 |
Seven publishers land between $55,503 (Built In) and $85,999 (Glassdoor) for the same job title. That is a cross-source span, not a merged salary. The recruiter view sits at $67,750 to $91,000 from Robert Half. The live-posting view sits at $60,000 to $75,000 from ColabContent, whose own page states that it is a sample of postings and not a salary survey, and which sells a fixed-price build as the alternative to the hire.
The BLS row needs its own warning. There is no BLS occupation for SEO at all. SOC 13-1161 bundles market research analysts with marketing specialists, which is why this article quotes $78,760 as an approximation of the field and never as an SEO median. Our marketing analyst salary and social media manager salary guides quote the same class from the May 2024 release at $76,950, which is a different vintage rather than a contradiction.
Two guide years are live on one site right now
Robert Half has rolled its US guide to 2027 while its own metro pages still serve 2026 numbers. The same title therefore carries two national bands on the same domain. The drift between them is small, 1.03x at the low end and 1.01x at the high end, and that stability is what makes the vintage discipline worth keeping: quote the 2027 band as 2027 and the 2026 band as 2026, and never blend the two into one range.
The publishers contradict themselves, and the arithmetic is theirs
Built In states its US average base as $55,503 and its own city table's comparator column as $52,721, a gap of about $2,800 or 1.05x from one page. Counting that page's percentage column backwards lands on a base near $60,100 for Remote and near $52,900 for Cleveland, two different baselines printed as one. ZipRecruiter publishes a median above its own average for SEO Technical Specialist, $89,200 against $87,353 or 1.02x. Glassdoor runs two Remote pages that disagree by $1,000. Two Indeed pages state in their own text that the figure above them is "based on -1 salaries taken from job postings", and one of those pages sits at rank 10 for this query.
Band widths say more about how a publisher grouped its rows than about what people earn. Robert Half's 2027 row runs 1.34x from low to high. Indeed's national figure runs 3.68x inside one number, its senior 2.51x and its junior 1.60x. Put a whole ladder in one row and that row gets wide.
The Level Ladder, Including the Rungs Nobody Published

Assigning one salary to "senior SEO specialist" is only possible publisher by publisher, because no single source in the current results publishes a complete junior-to-head ladder for this title. Here is what each rung actually has, with its owner named.
Rung | Published anchor | Owner and scope |
|---|---|---|
Associate | none | Absent. No verified associate-level SEO figure exists in this window. Do not read one into the junior rung. |
Junior | $56,704 average, $44,821 to $71,738 | Indeed, job postings, national, 6 postings |
Junior | $54,592 | SalaryExpert, employer survey, 1 to 3 years |
Junior | $51,867 | Built In, self-reported average, under one year |
Specialist | $82,212 average | Indeed, 895 postings |
Specialist | $78,500 mid | Robert Half 2027, projected starting salary |
Specialist | $67,388 average | ZipRecruiter, job postings |
Specialist | $64,000 midpoint | ColabContent, live postings |
Specialist | $59,179 average base | Payscale, 444 profiles |
Specialist | $85,999 average base | Glassdoor, second-hand, page unreachable |
Senior | $88,690 average, $55,943 to $140,604 | Indeed, job postings, 59 postings |
Senior | $104,103 average base | Glassdoor, second-hand |
Senior | $84,594 | SalaryExpert, employer survey, 8+ years |
Lead or manager | $86,206 average | ZipRecruiter, job postings |
Lead or manager | $81,910 average base | Payscale, self-reported |
Lead or manager | $137,016 average | Glassdoor, senior SEO manager, second-hand |
Head or director | $113,333 average | ZipRecruiter, Head of SEO, job postings |
Head or director | $104,845 average, $78,000 to $161,000 | Payscale, SEO Director, 58 profiles, updated Mar 2025 |
Two rows carry a caution that travels with the number. Indeed's junior figure rests on 6 postings against 895 for its all-levels figure. Payscale's director row was last updated in March 2025, more than a year older than the specialist row it would be compared against.
The steps between rungs disagree, and that is the useful part. Inside single publishers: Indeed senior against junior is 1.56x, SalaryExpert senior against entry 1.55x, Glassdoor senior specialist against specialist 1.21x, Payscale director against specialist 1.77x on a stale row, Built In's 7-plus-years band against its under-one-year band 1.58x. Four publishers price what the market treats as roughly the same promotion somewhere between 1.21x and 1.77x. Nobody is wrong. They draw their levels differently.
What does an SEO manager earn?
Glassdoor states $145,042 average for an SEO Manager with a 90th percentile of $255,374. ZipRecruiter states $86,206. Payscale states $81,910. Indeed publishes $60,182 to $132,406 with no average. You get four numbers for one title from four publishers, and Glassdoor's is self-reported by people who chose a title they considered a promotion. The marketing manager salary breakdown covers the rungs above.
Geography: Same Publisher, or It Does Not Count
Reading one source's city figure against another source's national figure uses two different rulers. Four contrasts below hold the publisher, the title and the measurement type constant.
Publisher | Measurement | High end | Low end | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Robert Half, 2027 guide | SEO Specialist, projected starting salary, high against high | Washington DC $121,030 | Greenville SC $87,360 | 1.39x |
Built In, one page | SEO Specialist, average base | Remote $81,782 | Cleveland OH $57,143 | 1.43x |
Indeed | SEO Specialist, job-posting range, low against low | San Francisco CA $87,385 | Coppell TX $58,572 | 1.49x |
Glassdoor | SEO Specialist, self-reported geo average, both stated against the same national | Los Angeles CA $99,054 | Remote $54,800 | 1.81x |
The Robert Half pair is the cleanest, because its DC and Greenville rows resolve to the same ratio at both ends of the band, which means the metro multiplier was applied consistently inside one guide. The Glassdoor pair is the widest and the most relevant to the remote question.
Remote pay is where the window stops agreeing with itself. Glassdoor says remote sits 37 to 38 percent below its national. Built In says its Remote figure is 36 percent above its own comparator, and 47 percent above its stated US average, though its percentage column resolves to neither baseline. Both statements cover the same country in the same year, and ColabContent counts 67 percent of postings as remote. No tiebreaker exists in the data, so it stays a contradiction.
In-House, Agency or Freelance: The Honest Answer
No verified single-publisher pay measure for in-house against agency exists for this title. Robert Half publishes no separate SEO agency ladder, and BLS, Indeed, ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor publish no employer-type split either. Anyone handing you a clean agency discount is filling a gap the data leaves open.
Two editorial tables point in opposite directions on freelance. TryAnalyze.ai, which sells an AI search analytics platform and publishes this table as an unverified editorial aggregation, puts the in-house median at $113,333, agency at $97,500 and freelance lowest at $89,313. Webflow.jobs, which runs a job board, prices in-house mid-market at $65,000 to $90,000 and freelance at $80,000 to $175,000, which is freelance above its in-house row. Neither publishes a methodology or a sample size. Separately: that $113,333 in-house median and ZipRecruiter's $113,333 Head of SEO average share the same digits and nothing else, and must never be read as corroboration.
The defensible answer is mechanism. GTM 8020, an agency publishing an argument about agency economics, works a $150 hourly rate at 70 percent utilisation through to roughly 1,330 billable hours and about $199,500 in revenue per specialist, leaving around half for salary after overhead and margin. That ceiling is arithmetic you can check, and it explains why agency pay plateaus while the client list grows.
The most useful non-pay fact here comes from a 2025 Search Engine Journal survey of 3,000 SEO professionals, cited via Webflow.jobs, which runs a job board. Agency SEO specialists report the lowest pay satisfaction at 45 percent and the highest learning-opportunity satisfaction at 78 percent. In-house enterprise roles report the highest overall satisfaction at 72 percent. Two different products: the agency sells exposure and a portfolio, the in-house seat sells depth and a cleaner attribution story. Our AI SEO for agencies guide covers what that portfolio needs to contain now.
Freelance rates diverge too far to summarise. Webflow.jobs, the job board, states $75 to $200 an hour, GTM 8020, an agency arguing about agency economics, puts entry at $50 to $75 and senior at $150 to $300 plus, and a Salary.com snippet gives a self-employed average of $76,438 a year. Three incompatible pictures, each with its owner named.
The Specialisation Premium
One comparison in the window prices several specialisms on a single methodology in a single guide year. Every midpoint below is measured against the SEO Specialist midpoint of $78,500 from Robert Half's 2027 US guide, and every one of them is a projected starting salary rather than an earnings figure.
Specialism | Midpoint | Against the SEO line |
|---|---|---|
Email Marketing Specialist | $67,000 | -14.6% |
Digital Marketing Specialist | $70,500 | -10.2% |
Paid Search Specialist | $77,000 | -1.9% |
SEO Specialist | $78,500 | baseline |
Marketing Automation Specialist | $86,000 | +9.6% |
Marketing Analytics Specialist | $88,500 | +12.7% |
Marketing Analytics Manager | $120,750 | +53.8% |
Organic search sits above general digital marketing by a clean 11.3 percent and level with paid search. It sits below the two specialisms that own measurement and automation, and that ordering survived a full guide year, which is why it is worth acting on. The marketing analytics tools landscape is where that premium is actually earned.
Technical SEO is the best-attested single premium in the window and the least agreed. Three sources point the same direction with different magnitudes: Webflow.jobs, the job board, puts technical SEO at $10,000 to $20,000 and technical specialists 25 to 35 percent above content-only specialists, GTM 8020, an agency writing about agency economics, stacks technical plus AI and ML skills into a $20,000 to $38,000 premium, and TryAnalyze.ai, a vendor whose aggregation runs on unverified rows, puts technical audits, schema, Core Web Vitals and basic SQL at roughly $10,000 to $15,000 above generalists at the same experience level. The direction is corroborated. The magnitude is not.
No sourced premium figure exists for ecommerce, international or multi-market SEO specialisation in this window. That absence is real, and it is not a gap to fill with a guess.
Is AI experience actually paying yet?
A study by Semrush, a vendor with its own commercial interest in this market, reads 3,900 US SEO job listings and finds AI mentioned in 31 percent of senior listings against 22.3 percent of other roles, LLM familiarity in nearly 10 percent of senior and 7.4 percent of mid-level roles, and SGE, AEO or AI Search named in 6.3 percent of senior and 3.7 percent of other roles.
Then the pair that should reframe this. Inside one sample of 215 live US postings from 158 companies, 27 percent mention AI and 2 percent ask for any evidence that you have built or shipped an AI or automation system. The demand signal is more than ten times the proof requirement. The AI premium is real as a signal and unproven as a hiring requirement, and that gap is your opening. The wider AI wage-premium research sits in our marketing analyst salary guide.
Two studies in this area both report 59 percent: one says mid-level roles are 59 percent of SEO postings, the other says Director, VP and Head-level roles are 59 percent of its listings. Same digits, different bands, no corroboration. What SEO automation changes inside the role itself is the more practical question.
How to Negotiate an SEO Specialist Offer
None of these is a benchmark you read back to a hiring manager.
- Bring an outcome with a number on it. "I owned organic" is a duty. "I took a channel from 40 to 200 monthly signups" is the reason you sit one band higher.
- Anchor on a same-publisher comparison. One metro against another inside one guide. Mix publishers and the other side of the table dismantles your number in one sentence.
- Get the level into the title. The words on the contract are the only signal a future employer will have. "Senior" costs the company nothing and pays at your next move.
- Name the specialism you own. Technical SEO, analytics and automation each carry a documented premium over the generalist line, stable across two guide years.
- Price the AI gap properly. Twenty-seven percent of postings mention AI and 2 percent ask you to prove it. Showing a shipped system, not a certificate, is scarce in a way the tables have not caught up with.
- Ask for the whole cost picture. Employer benefits run about 43 cents per wage dollar, so a $4,000 raise costs the employer roughly $5,700.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an SEO specialist make?
No single number answers this, because every source measures a different job. Robert Half's 2027 guide puts the national SEO Specialist band at $67,750 to $91,000 as projected starting salaries. Indeed's posting-derived average is $82,212 across 895 postings. Payscale's self-reported average base is $59,179 across 444 profiles, and Built In's anonymous community-submitted national average base is $55,503. Seven publishers span one title from that $55,503 to Glassdoor's self-reported national average base of $85,999, quoted second-hand, and that gap comes from what each one chose to measure.
Is SEO a good career in 2026?
The official outlook and the listing signal disagree. BLS OEWS projects the marketing specialist class to grow 7 percent between 2025 and 2035, with about 82,000 openings a year. Against that, Search Engine Journal, cited via OneHour.digital, reports SEO job listings down 37 percent year over year, and a Semrush study of 3,900 listings finds Director, VP and Head-level roles are now 59 percent of all postings against 15 percent for SEO Specialist. Fewer junior seats, more senior ones, and a narrower entry path. BLS, cited via National University, still shows US marketing-related employment growing from 3.77 million to 4.22 million between 2022 and 2024.
Do SEO specialists make more in-house or at an agency?
No verified single-publisher pay measure exists for this title, so be careful with anyone quoting a clean answer. What is measured is satisfaction: agency SEO specialists report the lowest pay satisfaction at 45 percent and the highest learning satisfaction at 78 percent, while in-house enterprise roles report the highest overall satisfaction at 72 percent. The agency ceiling has a structural cause. At a $150 hourly rate and 70 percent utilisation, one specialist generates roughly $199,500 in revenue, about half of which is left for salary after overhead and margin.
What does a senior SEO specialist earn?
It depends entirely on whose ladder you read, and the sample sizes travel with the numbers. Indeed puts senior at $88,690 across 59 postings against $56,704 for junior across 6 postings, a 1.56x step. SalaryExpert puts senior at $84,594 against $54,592 for entry level, a 1.55x step from employer survey data. Glassdoor's second-hand senior average is $104,103 against $85,999 for the standard title, a 1.21x step.
Is SEO being replaced by AI?
Not according to the postings, but the work is being repriced. In one sample of 215 live US postings, 27 percent mention AI and 2 percent ask for evidence of having built or shipped an AI or automation system. In a study of 3,900 listings, AI appears in 31 percent of senior postings against 22.3 percent of others, and Director, VP and Head-level roles account for 59 percent of listings. Execution work is moving to tools and the budget is moving to the strategic end.

Bring the Labelled Number to Your Next Review
The distance between $55,503, Built In's national average base from anonymous community submissions, and $85,999, Glassdoor's self-reported national average base quoted second-hand, comes from level, city and scope, and so does the distance between an $87,360 offer in Greenville and a $121,030 band in Washington DC. If the harder part is producing the evidence before the conversation, that is what Allable.ai is built for: keyword research, campaign work and reporting in one workspace, so the number you bring to the table is one you can show rather than one you promise. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, with Pro at €99 per month, Business at €199 and Scale at €399.
